Marathon 7 - Waterford
Today we had an Irish sporting legend start us off on day seven of our challenge. John Treacy former world cross country champion and Olympic Games silver Medalist had some lovely words to say about our challenge. "This is a great idea he said. Well done!" That was a nice start to what would be a hard day at the office.
We had some lovely people join us today, all local Waterford people. We always knew we would have some tough days and for Ken today was definitely just that. As we turned around the 13 mile barrier at the half way marker he received a shot of pain into his knee. He let out a roar and immediately stopped in his tracks. For a short time we were all very concerned and a physio (Siobhan) came out and did some remedial work on him. With a heavy strapping around the knee he walked for a few miles before jogging and eventually running albeit at a slow pace. Ken's father, Paddy, had come out to join him walking but ended up running the last few miles home with him! 5 hours and 35 minutes after starting, Ken crossed the line to a hero's welcome.
I (Gerry) felt OK after what was a 4 hours 42 minutes marathon, that is until I got off the physios plinth and immediately felt my body starting to seize up. We immediately jumped in the car and drove the short distance to Tramore and I jumped into the sea to ease the aching I was feeling.
As I write this in the car en route to Cork and tomorrow's marathon I can feel myself starting to come back to life. Please keep the Facebook messages coming, they are giving us a massive boost and mean so much to all of our team.
