Marathon 1 - Longford
An 8am start, where we were immediately swamped by a combination of media interest from Shannonside Northern Sound Radio, local press as well as the brilliant group of 26 runners who would join us on the first leg of our journey. In addition a huge number of family and close friends all arrived at the start line.
Given the fact that it was the first day a late start was inevitable but we had to be reasonably sharp as the police had actually held the traffic from the main street to allow us run up the centre of the road towards our canal run a little over five minutes away. The Longford run was mostly located along the royal Canal and involved 4 loops of 6.55 miles. Given the fact that we had not had a long run for three weeks both Ken and I both developed minor discomfort around the 14 mile mark. However we put it down to dusting off a few cobwebs and by mile 16 or 17 we were fine again.
We crossed the line in 4 hours and 38 minutes; a nice slow’ish start which was exactly what we needed on day one. Four hours later we were checking into our hotel in Dublin ahead of day two.
